The Mid-Year Reality Check Every O and A Level Student Needs

Mid year study check for O and A Level students

There is a point in the academic year when “I still have plenty of time” starts becoming a slightly dangerous sentence. You have attended classes, made notes, finished quite a few chapters and probably told yourself that you will properly start revision soon. Then you look at the calendar and realise the exams are not actually that far away.

That is your cue for a mid-year study check-in.

Not a panic session. Not an all-nighter. Just an honest look at where you actually stand.

First, Check What You Have Really Covered

Open your current Cambridge syllabus and go through it topic by topic. Cambridge itself recommends using the syllabus to understand what you need to learn, how it will be assessed and what skills the exam expects.

Don't mark a topic as “done” simply because your teacher finished it.

Ask yourself:

Can I explain the topic without looking at my notes?

Can I answer a question on it?

Do I understand the parts I found difficult in class?

Could I return to it after a few weeks and still remember it?

That distinction matters. Covered is not the same as mastered.

Find the Gaps You Keep Avoiding

Now look for the topics that make you think, “I'll come back to this later.”

Those are probably the ones that need your attention.

Create three simple categories:

Green: I understand it and can answer questions.

Blue: I understand the basics but make mistakes.

Red: I would struggle to explain or answer questions on it.

Don't spend the next month rereading everything equally. Your red and blue topics deserve more of your time.

Let Past Papers Tell You the Truth

Notes can make you feel prepared. Past papers can show you whether you actually are.

Cambridge recommends past papers and mark schemes because they help students become familiar with exam requirements, question styles and command words.

Do one paper under realistic conditions, then review it properly. Don't just count your marks. Look at why you lost them.

Was it a knowledge gap? Poor application? Misreading the question? Running out of time?

That information is far more useful than simply knowing your percentage.

Finally, Look at the Time You Have Left

Once you know what is left in the O Level or A Level syllabus, work backwards from your exam dates.

Give yourself time for:

Finishing content → fixing weak areas → past-paper practice → final revision.

And don't underestimate retrieval practice. Research consistently shows that actively trying to recall information strengthens long-term retention more effectively than simply reading the same material repeatedly.

A mid-year check isn't about discovering that you are behind.

It's about finding out where you stand while there is still time to do something about it.

With Orb-Ed, you can revisit recorded lessons, return to difficult concepts and build your revision around the areas that need the most attention.

Know where you stand. Know what comes next. Make the rest of the year count with Orb-Ed.
